To all the women…
From this 20 year old woman, still sussing out the world, learning about herself, learning to live with her past, to discover her dreams and discovering what makes her who she is… thank you.
Thank you to the women, who go about their lives unceremoniously, living each day because that is what we do. To the women who have taught me that being clever is pretty awesome, that knowledge is a powerful weapon and speaking your mind is important.
To the women that I read about, who stood up for injustice, who fought for civil rights, voting rights, who campaigned for change and who fought. To those today that fight, that protest, that campaign and complain, to those
who stand up against period poverty, FGM, racism, sexism, political bias and so much more. To those who speak and use their voices, loud or small.
Thanks to ALL the women.
To the woman who used to let me hide behind the school library desk at lunch, with my face in a book desperately trying to escape my life and discover a new one. Who found me books about love, hate, politics and powerful women that stood up for themselves, lived their lives how they wanted to and owned their stories.
To the woman who overheard me fretting about my weight in a dressing room, who told me that there was so much more to me and my story than the number on the label in my jeans.
To the woman I sit with every now and again on the streets with a cuppa, who shows me the real perseverance it can take to exist, to be, and for sharing her story even when she knows it’s not the path she had planned for herself.
To the women in healthcare that have saved my life, pushed me to do things that felt impossible and taught me the meaning of love, care and compassion. I admire you, I respect you and I dream to be like you.
To the women in my family, who have shown me the meaning of love, who care for me and show me that each woman struggles with their own battles, insecurities and lives – but that together we are stronger and together we can support eachother.
To my women friends, who constantly build me up, reassure me and boost my ego (and who bring me back down to earth when needed!!) Who share their lives, their stories and show compassion to me when I share mine. To my friends who have been hurt, abused and broken, who have felt and feel depressed and like nothing, yet who continue to breathe, to take each day as it comes and who live and share their past and their insecurities.
To the women I work with, have had the opportunity to meet through campaigns, shoots and talks. You are incredible, and you remind me each day to carry on learning to love and respect myself- and to encourage others to do the same.
Thanks to ALL the women.
Who fight for equality, deliberately or not. Who stand up for others when they cannot. To the women who protest, who fight, who argue- to the women that sacrifice themselves for others. To the rule breakers, liberators, silent supporters and vocal protestors, to those who use their voice on a large scale and small, who smile at others for no reason at all.
Shoutout to the women who live their lives, who work, who love, who live, who care. To the women alone, fighting daily, and those surrounded by people, fighting daily. To those who have gone through so much themsleves, continuing on and supporting others.
To all the women that are struggling with hidden battles, big or small. To those who have overcome, are overcoming or who dream to overcome. To the weak, to the strong, to the happy and the sad. To those who have been through hell and back.
To all those women,
HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY.
